August 11, 2013

Last week I didn't write because Rob was kind enough to share his stomach bug with me and I wasn't feeling well.  I will try to catch up and write for both weeks.

August 1st marked the last day of summer camp for the boys.  Justin always seemed to enjoy his time once he got there, but he was never very excited to go.  Ryan, on the other hand, was always excited to go.  It was good for them to get out of the house a bit and quite a nice break for me.  Ryan is on the waiting list to go to the preschool there in the Fall.  I think that he is going to miss Justin once school starts and it would be nice for him to have a chance to have something special for him as well.  Keep your fingers crossed that an opening comes up.

On August 2nd, Justin decided that it was his time for the stomach bug.  He didn't have much diarrhea, but he managed to vomit many times.  Unfortunately, one of the locations was my freshly cleaned floor.  Sigh.  At least it wasn't the rug.  I cleaned up and then mopped the floor yet again.  He didn't eat for the rest of that day or much the next.  I always worry about my skinny little J Man when he doesn't eat.  He doesn't have a lot of weight to lose.  Fortunately, he was feeling better by the 3rd, just not eating quite yet.

Saturday the 3rd we had a BBQ here with employees and families from Rob's section at work.  He works with some neat people.  We had gotten together with them at the beginning of July and I knew that they are a pretty laid back group so it wouldn't be a lot of work.  Everyone brought something so we just supplied the place, the paper products, potato salad, and a few drinks.  The weather was perfect and we were able to sit out on the patio, out on the lawn, or inside the house.  There was more than enough food and it was a nice get together.  Ryan really enjoyed all of the outdoor time.  The pictures aren't very exciting, but at least my mom can see a little of our yard.

And then Sunday came and it was my turn with the stomach bug.  That pretty much sums up Sunday through Tuesday for me.  Rob and the boys went to church on Sunday.  The boys were pretty good on Monday and Tuesday.  They got a lot of extra time on the ipad, ipod, etc.

Wednesday was our 11th anniversary. The boys tried to make it extra special by creating "fun" games for me to play.  They also managed to pull out just about every toy they owned to help decorate.  Joy.  Evidently it wasn't hot enough for them, so they had lots of blankets for me too so I could be comfy.  Ryan combed his own hair without complaint.  I was feeling much better, but not 100%.  I envied Rob being able to go to work and miss out on the celebration.  I guess it was sweet of them though to want to do special things to make it the best anniversary ever.

On Thursday I had an exciting outing to the Embassy for my health briefing and to get my picture taken for my diplomatic id.  I had the boys with me, of course, but they were hooked up to the ipod and the iphone and headphones so they were angels.  It's nice to be able to keep them quiet when needed.  When we got home, we spent time outside.  They enjoyed riding their bikes outside in our cul de sac.  I hate to watch because sometimes they get going pretty fast and they are not nearly as skilled as they believe they are.

Friday brought more time outside.  This week I was able to pull quite a few weeds while I was out watching the boys.

The weekend was pretty routine.  Saturday the boys wanted to show off their bike skills for Daddy.  I pulled out a scooter that I had purchased for them last month and they got to try that as well.

Somewhere along the way, Justin managed to lose his tooth.  Then, when he was cleaning it, he really lost it.  Luckily, the tooth fairy is quite understanding.

July 21- July 27

It was an interesting week.  Poor Rob had a stomach bug and ended up spending some time at home instead of going in to work.  The boys were so excited to have him around and that made it kind of hard for him to rest as much as he probably would have liked.  The boys aren't very interested in me when he is around.  There was a lot of wii played this week!

This week our family finally finished reading The Book of Mormon.  We started over three years ago.  Obviously, we didn't read much during our nightly readings.  With the boys taking turns reading it made things even slower.  We got through it though and Justin was excited to start the Doctrine & Covenants.  I was kind of leaning towards the New Testament, but we will get there eventually.

Rob was caught doing some logic problems on his iPad and the boys really wanted to help.  Their logic was a little bit interesting at times.  They decided to create their own logic problems for Rob to solve.  Justin's was very tricky.  Ryan's must have been a bit easier, as Rob was told that he finished it in expert time.

On Wednesday the boys and I went to the Magic Sand Center with the Embassy CLO group.  It was a very interesting place.  I think it would be neat to have some of their resources.  It was a nice outing, but I must say that it was an odd combination of unstructured yet overly directed. We started in a room that had light box tables with some fine sand on it.  The boys really enjoyed playing with the sand by letting it flow through their fingers and by moving it around on the surface.  Unfortunately, this was not the goal. A woman was up at the front with her own light box which was projected on a screen in front of the room.  She would draw something in her sand and instruct the children to draw what she was drawing.  Make a sun like this, draw clouds like this, etc. etc.  The boys were enjoying themselves, but the woman was looking tense as they were not doing what she was doing.  I took them downstairs to another area.  I knew it was there only because a younger girl had already gone down there because it was thought that the upstairs activity would be too difficult for her.  Well, yeah, the way it was run it would be.  Allowing her to explore the sand would have been fine though.

The small room downstairs had a large sand table.  It was like an elevated sandbox.  There were numerous toys in baskets on shelves that could be used in the table.  My boys quickly settled down and had a fun time playing in the sand.  They were hiding buried treasure to discover.  Another woman decided to try to direct the children's play another way.  She had a toy dolphin and tried to get the children to build it little paths to swim through.  Some of the children did, but Justin and Ryan just kind of looked at her like she was crazy.  They didn't want to build tall mountains with a small stream for her to swim through.

Justin and Ryan saw that some kids had been doing something else upstairs, so they went up to see what else there was.  They discovered their very favorite room.  It was full of stuffing and pillows.  It was like a pillow fight out of control.  They ran, jumped, hid, and had a great time.  The woman up there told them to be careful because the floor under the pillows was hard.  Sure, young boys are really concerned about the floor.  They jump off the top bunk bed and their floor is plenty hard.  She then tried to get the kids to relax and do a visualization exercise.  It was my kids and a three year old.  Guess what.  It didn't really work out so well for her.

Back downstairs one of the children was doing a cool painting activity.  Of course all of the children wanted to try it.  No problem, right?  Well, they only had one tray so only one child at a time could do it.  They had to wait for their turn.  The other areas were already cleaned up.  Hmmm, not the best planning.  They tried denying the three year old her turn saying she was too young.  The woman assisting was basically helping the younger children (including Justin) by controlling their project hand over hand.  Since we were running late, Justin and Ryan had to share a turn and a picture.  Once finished, we were told it took an hour to dry.  WHY wouldn't they start with that activity then?!?  Luckily, someone was able to pick ours up later.
I was glad that we went with the CLO group.  I never would have found the place on my own.  I wouldn't have had a clue what to do once I went in either.  There were plenty of employees, at least two spoke English, but they acted like tweens trying to run a summer camp without being given much guidance.  The boys had fun so we may go back, but we will be more assertive and say what we want to do and in what order.  We would also bring exact change.  It never ceases to amaze me how many businesses overseas don't have change.

The Magic Sand Center claims to also be a therapy center.  I think that is one of the biggest joke.  I think they could do a lot to make it a great center for sensory activities that could be both fun and therapeutic, but for now it is a place to spend a pleasant hour IF you know what is available and plan your time accordingly.

Another week of summer camp for the boys.  Justin actually did a couple of the crafts this week too.  We made a Mario and Luigi and did a couple of other things at home too.  I guess I need to look at what we have done over the past few months and update the entertaining my kids blog.

June 30, 2013

This week has been pretty unexciting.  I have been unpacking boxes and going up and down stairs trying to find where to put things.  Sometimes it seems like I make a bigger mess when I am trying to organize things and get them put away.

Wednesday it was time to venture out of the house to go into the city.  Going up and down the stairs was making my cough worse and I needed a break from unpacking.  I also needed a SIM card for my phone.  I don't like the thought of going out without a phone, but I needed to get out to get a SIM for my phone.

Now this wasn't my first attempt.  We had gone out for a SIM card earlier.  We went to the Orange Mobile store and one of the two employees spoke good English.  Unfortunately, their computers were down in that shop so they couldn't sell me a SIM card.  There was another location down the street.  It turned out being further down the street then we anticipated, but we made it.  I told the employee at the reception desk that I needed a SIM card for an iPhone 4s.  The employee who does that was busy with another customer so I was told it would be a few minutes.  We waited and then I got to go back to the computer.  Pretty special.  I gave her my passport and she asked what kind of phone I had.  Oops.  They didn't have that size SIM card.  They would, however, be happy to sell me one that I could have cut down.  Uh, no.  I realize it isn't a complicated procedure, but I would like to purchase a card I could stick in my phone and try out.

So, this was the second attempt out for a SIM card.  We took a taxi to the Orange Armenia flagship store and were greeted by about 8 employees, none of whom spoke much English.  Why they put English speakers in small stores and not the main one, I don't know.  Now I realize that I don't speak Armenian and this is their country, but I would think that pointing to an empty SIM card slot in a store that sells SIM cards should be pretty self-explanatory to the employees.  Anyway, a woman copies my passport and enters in heaven knows what into the computer.  She didn't require my firstborn child, but perhaps that is because he was right there and she decided she didn't want him or his equally impatient brother.  I get a paper to take to the cashier (a whole five feet away) and pay the 1000 drams (less than $2.50 USD).  I walk back over to the woman with the receipt, which she doesn't even look at, and get my SIM card and I stick it in my phone.  Success!  She then says "20 drams" and I have no idea what she means.  Do I have to go back yet again and pay 20 drams for something?  She mimes talking on a phone and says 20 drams and then tells me the phone costs 20 drams.  She says something to the sales person next to her and that person says 20 drams.  Yeah, I got that.  I query with "simple" which is the name of the plan where it costs 20 drams a minute to call phones, 20 drams per text, etc.  Evidently that was it.

I promised the boys a treat if they were decent human beings while we were in the store.  We walked across the street and they got some gelato.  Cotton candy and some other treats are sold there too, so we might want to go back.  Good location for things downtown and a good bribe.  There is a small supermarket across the other street from the Orange store, so we went in and looked for canned pineapple that I needed for a future dinner.  It's a small store, but amazing how much they can pack into it.  Of course I couldn't find the pineapple.  Luckily, with the help of my handy dandy google translate app, I was able to have someone help me find it.

We were right at a major intersection, so it was easy to find a taxi to take us home.  We flagged down a licensed cab and I once again used google translate to tell the driver where I wanted to go.  I was pleasantly surprised that he spoke some English.  As we drove through the crowded streets, he pointed out some things including the church where he was married and his baby was baptized.  Whenever we stopped at a light or other minor traffic incident, our driver would turn off the car.  He indicated that he was saving gas.  What he actually said was "benzene small" and pointed to the gas gauge.  I wondered how much he was saving or if the restarting possibly used more than just leaving it running for a bit.  It wasn't like we were sitting for several minutes at a time or anything.

He misunderstood and drove into the driveway of the house next door.  That house appears to be mostly vacant and being used to film movies/TV/something on occasion.  Good enough.  Even though he was a licensed cab he didn't have a meter.  I gave him 1400 dram which should have been enough.  He told me that our neighborhood is out of the city, blah, blah, blah and that I owed him another 1000 drams.  I argued with him  and he gave me the sad story of how expensive it is to fill the tank.  I told him that I had a problem because I didn't understand why he was trying to charge me so much and that I was going to have to call someone to help me sort it out.  He decided that I didn't really owe him the extra 1000 drams.  We got out of the cab and I gave him a dirty look.  I haven't had to argue with a cab driver since China.

Justin then asked me where we were.  Clueless child.  Hello?  See our house right there?  Guess not.  He'll figure it out eventually.

Thursday and Friday were pretty routine around the house.  Unpacking, playing with the boys, and trying to walk around the neighborhood a bit.  Justin was able to remember the way to his school and it took us 5:28 seconds to walk there the long way at a fairly leisurely pace.  Winter may be a different story.
Friday was exciting because Rob brought home our car!  That will make things a bit easier.  Of course I have no idea where we live in relationship to things, so it will take awhile for me.  Should make things easier for him getting to and from work on his own schedule.

We also got our meat and produce order on Friday. Produce is interesting here.  I ordered some celery because Ryan really likes it.  It tastes like celery and, unlike Namibia, has the right texture.  It just has the diameter of a pencil.

Saturday I woke up and went downstairs to find the boys playing wii (what a surprise) and Rob busy baking our weekly bread.  They have a lot of interesting bread here, much of it is pretty good.  They do not, however, have bread that can be used to make acceptable peanut butter and honey sandwiches.  That is a major staple for the boys, so Rob makes us bread and he does a great job.  He also surprised us with some yummy cinnamon bread. Saturday was also a day to work on the computer room, getting the boys' bikes rideable, and just spending some time together.  The boys miss Daddy during the week.  He comes home around 6:30, we eat dinner, and then it is time for the bedtime routine.  Saturday is catch up with Daddy day.

Sunday we went to church.  We made it there and back without any wrong turns.  I don't think I could find it again to save my life.  Guess it will take time.  The roads are pretty crazy and going straight doesn't mean that you are staying on the same road.  In fact, going straight can mean that you are driving head on into traffic.  The marshrutni, or mini buses, are crazy!  Picture vans that hold about 12 seated passengers (and some standing) dropping people off here and there.  Guess it is better to dodge them than to be smashed in one.

Sunday night we went to dinner at the Hansen's.  They live on our same street and we know them from church Rob's work.  We had a nice evening with them and their two boys.  Their oldest son is three and my kids enjoyed having a playmate.

Next week is going to be a busy one with two outings for us.  Justin and Ryan will also be starting a summer camp program on Tuesdays and Thursdays as well.  I hope to be able to tackle the playroom and the library nook.  It is frustrating since some of our things are not yet here.  I want to do things like put the DVDs away, but I can't do that before the shelf for them comes.  I need to just do my best for now and fine tune things as I can.
